I know this wont be the most popular stance, but Id like you to cut those in dienstgrad just a little bit of slack. Sure, there are some things your anfhrer should never do. But, most times, bad anfhreres arent bad people theyre only trying to figure it all out just like the rest of us.Instead of thinking of ways to deal with a bad boss, lets consider ways in which you can help your boss get better. Great leaders have absolutely had someone do that for them. Plus, it will knock you out of a blaming mentality and help you consider how you can take control of and improve your situation.1. Learn Your Bosss PrioritiesOftentimes employees clash with bosses because their priorities are not clear or are misaligned. Before approaching your boss, take the time to learn where her priorities lie. Remember that this isnt a guessing game or reading tea leaves, you may learn her pri orities through observation or you could also just ask. Once you know her priorities, you can pitch ideas that speak to those priorities. Youll be surprised how willing your boss is to listen and agree if you are speaking to what matters to her. You dont have to change your ask, just the way your ask is framed.2. Understand Communication PreferencesThere are some ways bad bosses communicate, but you can change how you communicate with your boss. A way of ensuring your voice is heard is to understand the best times and ways to reach out to your boss. Does your boss prefer email or an in-person meeting? Is she in the best spirits mid-morning or later in the day? Do meetings with her boss stress her out and require a lot of planning? Is she in a bad mood just before a presentation? Are impromptu conversations okay or do you need to send an agenda the day before the two of you meet? Make note of when your interactions have gone well so you can repeat those patterns.3. Take InitiativeBos ses should be an escalation point. Remember that not everything needs to be escalated, though. Consider how you can come to your boss with solutions instead of problems to be solved. It is usually much easier for someone to react to an idea that is presented rather than coming up with a solution that is brand new. Plus, youll get to demonstrate your proactive problem-solving skills and practice tackling challenges. Taking solutions to your boss can also get you exposure if those ideas are implemented or provide a great deal of value to your customers or colleagues.4. Stay PositiveOffer things you CAN do, rather than focusing on what cannot be done. If you cant get a project done by the end of the week, share when you can have it done. The message is the same, but one is significantly easier to digest. To say what you cant do ends up putting the burden back on your boss to figure out how the assignment can be completed.5. Have EmpathyPracticing empathy can be particularly difficult w hen you dont feel like your boss is being supportive after all, it may not be your boss, it may be your attitude. Take a moment to reflect and imagine what assumptions she may be making or motivations she might have for her behavior. Seeing things from someone elses perspective can help to improve a relationship.6. Be ConsistentConsistently showing up, getting things done and being proactive will shape how your boss, and others, see you. Consider how youd like to be seen. What is the image youd like others to have of you? Once you decide how you want to be seen, you can tailor your messaging and actions to curate that image.7. Find AlliesWho are the people that seem to have influence with your boss or have thrived despite a lack of support? They may be able to help you navigate tricky waters with your boss. Learn from their behaviors and ask for their advice and advocacy as you work to improve your relationship with your boss. They will likely have both insights into your bosss tox ic behavior and best practices for how to approach them.You may be surprised to see how a bad boss can turn into a good boss with a little effort and tweaks to your approach. I wonder if it was any easier doing that because it is such a fashionable brand and cache.Aliza I think you cant paint the DKNY PR GIRL brush across every brand. Whats right for one company is elend necessarily right for aleidher. Before a company or a brand embarks on social media they really need to think about what kind of image they want to portray because social media really has to be a curated version of your best self.The person who is in charge of that social media can really be positive to the company brand or detrimental to the brand. I always advise brands to create a filter first so that they themselves understand what their core brand values are and the types of things that they would or would not be talking about.Monster It sounds like you probably want to mix it up. You never want it to be one thing but you dont want to be schizophrenic.Aliza You hit the nail on the head. The best way to sort of judge yourself is to look back at your own timeline and just think if you werent you, if you were a stranger reading your timeline, what kind of impression do you make?Monster When you first started tweeting as DKNY PR GIRL, you used a fictional persona so it wasnt you that was out there in front of the audience, and t hen later you sort of came out from behind that persona. Why was that important to do at some point did you feel?Aliza The idea to reveal me as the person behind the Twitter handle was really stemmed from other people in the company saying, Okay, all anyone wants to know is who this person is. It became this big mystery and it started to inhibit the brand from participating in social media conferences.Monster Was it difficult when you were then starting to tweet as yourself?Aliza I really kept true to the persona that I had created which really is my personality but of course its much easier to say whatever you want when nobody knows who you are. I really stuck to the program because I didnt want people to turn around and be like, Oh, god now that shes out that handle is terrible, shes not tweeting anything she used to. I really wanted to be true to the voice which is my voice in real life by the way but it just felt much more vulnerable once I came out.Monster Youve been very gener ous in talking about your team, your PR team that helps you do what you do. Im wondering what can you tell us about how you guide them in how to best represent the DKNY brand?Aliza I tend to create a very open work environment where people feel empowered and when people feel empowered they innately feel more passionate. Everyone gives 200%, its just how it is and I do as well. They know theres nothing that they do that I havent done before or wouldnt do again. Its very much that mentality.As far as living and breathing the brand, I think that thats one of the most important things you can do when you sort of look to represent a company in any communications role whether it be PR, marketing or advertising. I think you have to believe in the product. I personally could not do this job if I didnt believe in the product.Monster Do you use or provide your employees with a social media Blue Book or guidelines for the company?Aliza We have a social media policy, of course, and every compan y should have a social media policy in place for their employees. Every employee should read that before they post.Monster How you have recovered from moments where a tweet has gone out and its like, Ooh, should not have said that. Or, Wow look at that reaction. How would you recommend employers navigate that territory?Aliza I always say theres a big difference in saying Im sorry or saying Im sorry but Pointing your blame elsewhere doesnt go over well in social media.People expect brands to take that responsibility and to own that responsibility. Weve seen many, many examples of CEOs who try to sort of point the finger elsewhere when things have not gone their way in their companies.I think they should read my book first of all, but they should really stop doing that because its a self-perpetuating problem. The billionaire SpaceX and Tesla mogul has gone from commended CEO and thought leader to one of the most controversial news topics of late. Musk recently came under fire for his involvement in the Thailand cave rescue. Musks attempt to aid the recovery of a boys soccer team stuck in a cave backfired after the rescue team and the media questioned whether Musks mini-submarine was intended to help the children or Musks public image. Musk went on to engage in a Twitter rant that raised eyebrows.In June, Tesla laid off 9 percent of its employees while reportedly pushing remaining workers to the limit to meet slipping production quotas. The workplace demand became so intense Musk reportedly took to sleeping on the floor of the Fremont, California factory and fueling exhausted workers with Red Bull.While colleagues have voiced their discontent with Musks b ehavior and work demands, the CEO says the complaints about him are exaggerated and issues in the workplace were swiftly resolved. We turn to employee reviews for SpaceX and Tesla to get the scoop.Musk was rated 49 in Glassdoors 2018 Top CEOs list for his role at SpaceX, and currently holds a 97% approval rating one employee even dubbed him Uncle Elon. He dropped from his position at 8 CEO in 2017, when he received a 98% approval rating.
